Use of local earth can have a really beautiful and also modern/finished look when used in a rammed earth process.

Rammed earth can make a great raised bed.

The correct mix and pressure needs to be used to build successfully with rammed earth. But an experienced rammed earth builder can guide unskilled labor to build a safe and substantial structure. This is an approach that should be used much more broadly than it is. A few architects have learned to use it, but there is no reason this should not be wildly popular.

Pros:
Beautiful and artistic.
Earthquake and fire resistance.
Inexpensive.
Temperature regulation, especially in drylands.
Low maintenance.

Cons:
Thinner walls will provide less insulation. Walls need to be thick to provide good temperature regulation.
Is vulnerable to rain damage and must be protected. Better to use in drylands settings.
