Hands On Activity

Take a trowel or shovel and dig 6-12” into undisturbed soil under trees, and then dig into soil in a disturbed, more barren area. This could be soil that has been driven on or walked on a lot or dug up (such as an area where repairs or construction has happened), or was otherwise disturbed, or simply relatively barren looking. 

Take a photo of or note what each layer of the soil looks like. How are the two samples different, how are they similar?
