(Jacke and Toensmeier)
There are usually a number of microclimates on a site, such as a valley, the top of a hill, a heavily wooded spot versus a meadow. These are relatively easy to remedy. One example for us was an avocado we planted in a cold spot. Cold sinks, and it was toward the bottom of a slope. But the cold is also stopped by foliage, so we will plant bushes on the upslope around the avocado that will absorb the cold as it floats downhill. The tree is otherwise well located with protection from a nearby oak that warms the area up a bit, and in a rich soil area with very good drainage. So we’re going to modify the microclimate.

Drawing, protected slope.
In this scenario, trees are protected from the downhill flow of cold air by a fence. Like water, air will follow the path of least resistance.
