Access and circulation is an aspect that is often forgotten or neglected. Can you reach the portions of the site you need to reach, with the equipment you need to deliver or use there?

If you can’t reach it, or if it is technically or cost prohibitive, you can’t implement the design.

How are you going to access and move from point to point in your design?

Is this going to work a few years from now when you are busy harvesting or maintaining a larger volume than what you start with?

Does the access plan allow for flexibility in use?

Will your water solutions wash out your access, or could you align the way you access your site with water capture - for instance, use the roads to direct water to various points in your site? Or use bermed roads to direct water away from parts of your site?

This is a great place to apply “Integrate, Don’t Segregate.”

Landform and water flows can substantially influence how and where you place your roads.

When determining the staging of how you will install the design, ensure you maintain access to areas you’ll need to access before you install other infrastructure like buildings or trees. Access roads are often somewhat easy to modify, add or remove, but circulation through the site should be determined early in the process and aligned and coordinated with the other points.
