The only places where soils are conserved or increased are:

  • In intact forests
  • Under the quiet waters of lakes and ponds
  • In prairies and meadows of permanent plants (often grazing animals are key to building soil in these systems)
  • Where we grow plants with mulched and non-tillage, undisturbed systems

  • Essential soil building needs are:

  • No chemicals
  • No turning
  • Regular addition of organic material
  • No compaction
  • Good system interaction through design

  • If you want truly permanent, regenerative systems, make sure these elements are there! In the next section of the course, we’ll talk about a number of ways you can build beautiful, nutrient rich, permanent soil in any ecosystem.

    Further Study

Robert Kourik has created a wonderful body of detailed work on plants, roots, irrigation and other plant related topics. Here’s an article on plant roots - important to understand since this is why you are building soil.
